In 18th-century Austria, women killed so that they could confess, be absolved and go to the scaffold, because suicide meant eternal damnation. The directing duo found their testimonies in real interrogation records, and the lead actress wrote the music for this suffocating folk horror.
In Austria in 1750, Agnes marries Wolf and leaves her mother’s home for his cottage at the edge of the forest. Her wedding gift is a severed human finger, said to help a woman conceive, yet her husband won’t touch her. With work from dawn, a mother-in-law always watching and no one in the village to talk to, Agnes keeps returning to the place where a woman was executed.
