In Michelangelo Antonioni’s drama about running away from yourself, Jack Nicholson plays a journalist who takes on a stranger’s identity and stows away in someone else’s life. Stay for the seven-minute penultimate shot, regarded as one of the most masterful in the history of cinema.
Disillusioned with his life and his job, TV reporter David Locke is trying to make a documentary about a civil war in North Africa, but he can’t find the guerrillas he wants to reach. When his car gets stuck in the sand, he walks back to his hotel and finds Robertson, a businessman he barely knew, dead in the next room. Locke swaps the photos in their passports and goes on checking in under a new name.
