A teacher posted to a remote Himalayan village couldn’t care less about teaching, but the local children feel very differently. Tender and disarmingly honest, the film earned Bhutan the first Oscar nomination in its history.
Ugyen is a young teacher in Thimphu who would much rather be making a career as a singer in Australia. Instead, the ministry sends him to Lunana, the most remote village in the country, where the last stretch of the journey takes several days on foot and there’s no electricity. As soon as he arrives, Ugyen asks to be sent back.
