In 1931 three mixed-race Aboriginal girls escaped an assimilation camp and walked 1,600 kilometres across Australia, following a fence built to keep out rabbits. The eldest was fourteen, and the screenplay comes from a book about that walk by her daughter, Doris Pilkington.
In Western Australia in 1931, a policeman arrives with an official order and takes away fourteen-year-old Molly, her eight-year-old sister Daisy and their ten-year-old cousin Gracie. He delivers them to a settlement where children like them are forbidden to speak their own language. Molly waits for a storm that will wash away their tracks, and when the rain comes, the girls will walk out through the gate.
