Why we chose it

Carla Simón took a prize in Berlin with her debut before “Alcarràs” won her the Golden Bear. She was six when her mother died and she went to live with her aunt and uncle, and years later she went back to the same Catalan village to recreate the summer of 1993 with real tenderness.

Synopsis

Frida is six, and she says nothing as the last of her mother’s belongings disappear into boxes. She leaves Barcelona for the Catalan countryside, where her uncle, his wife and their little daughter take her in with open arms. Settling into the house, the village and life with a new sister is slower going, and Frida is left grappling with feelings she can’t yet understand or put a name to.
