Robert Redford plays a CIA analyst who has only read about fieldwork, until now. While Pollack was shooting this paranoid conspiracy thriller, the press exposed illegal CIA operations uncannily like its plot. The novel was “Six Days of the Condor”, and the film keeps three of them for tighter drama.
Joe Turner reads newspapers and novels for the CIA and writes them up in reports, working from a New York office that poses as a literary society. He flags a feeble thriller that nobody bought but someone had translated into several languages, then heads out for lunch. When he comes back, everyone he worked with is dead, and he picks up the phone to call the emergency number.
