Jean Keraudy, who plays Roland, really did take part in a prison escape, and critics have called the film the anti-“Shawshank”: no cruel warden, just inmates, concrete walls and a goal. In his last film, Jacques Becker keeps you guessing which of the five will be the first to talk.
In La Santé prison in Paris, 1947, four men sharing a cell have spent a long time quietly preparing to break out. During renovation work, a polite young prisoner called Claude Gaspard is moved in with them. They watch him closely for a while, and then they show him what’s under the floor.
