Gérard Depardieu plays a court musician, and his son Guillaume plays him young as Marais, pupil of the reclusive master Sainte-Colombe, who wants nothing to do with the glitter of the court. The film won seven Césars, including Best Film, and its baroque soundtrack became a chart hit.
After his wife dies, the virtuoso Sainte-Colombe stops playing for anyone else. He builds himself a hut and gives his life to music and to raising his two daughters, until seventeen-year-old Marin Marais turns up at the gate, having already outgrown every teacher he’s had. He says he wants to learn from the best, but there’s something he wants even more.
