Geoffrey Rush won a historic sweep of awards, including the Oscar, the Golden Globe and the BAFTA, for playing the Australian pianist David Helfgott, who learns his instrument under a tyrannical father who can’t stand failure. Chasing perfection will cost him dearly.
In 1950s Adelaide, Peter Helfgott, a Holocaust survivor, teaches his son the piano and won’t even hear of mediocrity. David wins competition after competition, but when an invitation comes to study in America, his father forbids him to go. A few years later the boy is offered a scholarship in London, and this time he leaves against his father’s will.
