An eleven-year-old has decided his absent father must be something like Michael Jackson, so it’s a jolt when the man comes home from prison looking nothing like an idol. Taika Waititi (“What We Do in the Shadows”) directs and plays the dad in one of New Zealand’s highest-grossing films ever.
It’s 1984 in Waihau Bay, New Zealand, and eleven-year-old Boy lives with his little brother Rocky and their grandmother, telling his friends ever grander stories about a father he barely remembers when he isn’t obsessing over Michael Jackson. Then his grandmother leaves for Wellington and he has the house to himself. That’s when a car pulls into the yard, and the man behind the wheel is his father, just out of prison.
