Louise Courvoisier found her cast at farm fairs in her native Jura, in France, for this story of an eighteen-year-old out to win a contest for the best cheese, and it took the Youth Award in Un Certain Regard at Cannes. It’s warm and big-hearted about friendship and love, cheese included.
Totone is eighteen and spends his nights at village dances, until his father dies in a car accident and leaves him alone with his little sister Claire. Just then a regional contest for the best Comté gets under way, with thirty thousand euros for the winner. Totone has never made cheese in his life, and the only milk around belongs to Marie-Lise on the farm next door.
