Nick Cave wrote this Prohibition western, and its American South is packed with great actors, from Tom Hardy, Guy Pearce and Shia LaBeouf to Gary Oldman and Jessica Chastain. The Bondurant brothers are selling moonshine on the wrong side of the law in a stifling, brutal Virginia.
It’s 1931 in Franklin County, Virginia, deep in Prohibition, and the three Bondurant brothers are making moonshine and selling it from a roadside filling station. Jack, the youngest, is desperate to earn some respect. When Charlie Rakes, a special deputy from the city, arrives to demand a cut from every moonshiner in the county, the middle brother, Forrest, refuses and talks his neighbours into doing the same. The answer is a beating, and Jack is the one who takes it.
