The novelist Paul Auster directs Harvey Keitel, and as in his books, chance holds people’s lives in its grip. One night takes something from a New York saxophonist and gives him something back, a love affair and a mysterious stone, and there’s no telling which is the curse and which the luck.
Izzy Maurer is playing saxophone in a New York club when a shooting breaks out, and he wakes up in hospital with one lung and no hope of ever playing again. Out walking one night, he stumbles on a dead body and takes the briefcase lying beside it, which holds a napkin with a phone number and a small stone that glows blue in the dark. The number belongs to Celia, an actress waiting to hear about a part, and a romance begins.
