Toni Collette (“Hereditary”) carries a film about the strength of friendship that Australians still quote line for line. It starts out as a comedy about Muriel, the girl everyone laughs at, who escapes into ABBA songs and dreams of a wedding. But her happiness isn’t waiting at the altar.
Muriel Heslop has no job, no prospects and a single dream: her wedding day. Her friends have just told her she embarrasses them. When her mother gives her money to buy stock for selling cosmetics, Muriel blows the lot on a holiday at the very resort where those same girls are staying. There she meets Rhonda, and the two hit it off at once. Together they head for Sydney, where Muriel gives herself a new name.
