Why we chose it

Robert Bresson, a master of form, turns what could have been an ordinary crime film into his own “Crime and Punishment”, with an astonishing choreography of wrists, wallets and pockets. The hands belong to a cast trained by Henri Kassagi, a professional pickpocket who also plays one of the thieves.

Synopsis

A young man steals money from a spectator at the racecourse and is arrested, only to be released for lack of evidence. Soon afterwards he meets a group of pickpockets who teach him the tricks of their trade. But the cocky young man’s new career has already caught the eye of a police inspector.
