Sony asked Charlie Kaufman for a horror film, and he took it seriously in his own way: his directing debut seethes with existential dread. Philip Seymour Hoffman plays a theatre director who builds a full-scale copy of his life in a warehouse, until stage and life stop being separate things.
Caden Cotard is a theatre director and a hypochondriac whose health is failing, whose marriage is falling apart and who can’t stop thinking about death. When a generous arts grant comes his way, he rents a vast warehouse and starts building New York inside it at full scale. The rehearsals go on for years.
