Mia Hansen-Løve (“Bergman Island”) won the Silver Bear for Best Director at Berlin for this story of a Paris philosophy teacher, played by Isabelle Huppert, who loves teaching people to think. One by one she loses everything her life was built on, until all she has left is her freedom.
Nathalie has taught philosophy at a Paris lycée for years when, over dinner, her husband announces he’s leaving her for another woman. Her publisher loses interest in her books, and her mother dies, leaving her an old black cat called Pandora. A former student of hers now lives in a commune of young anarchists in the mountains, so Nathalie goes to see him.
