Jacques Rivette won the Grand Prix at Cannes for this duel of muse and artist at the canvas, monumental in every sense, length included. Emmanuelle Béart poses and Michel Piccoli draws, but the hand in close-up belongs to a real painter, Bernard Dufour. Is this an act of creation or destruction?
Édouard Frenhofer lives in the south of France and hasn’t painted in years, not since he abandoned an unfinished canvas of his wife, Liz. Then a young painter comes to visit and, without asking her, offers the old master his girlfriend Marianne as a model for a nude. The next morning she undresses in the studio and Frenhofer starts to work. It won’t be pleasant.
