In a single week, Finnish boxer Olli Mäki fought for the world title and fell head over heels in love, and his story won Juho Kuosmanen the Un Certain Regard prize at Cannes. Shot on a rare film stock that recalls 1960s television, it’s a boxing film where the heart hits harder than the fist.
In Finland in 1962, Olli Mäki is the country’s best featherweight, and in a few weeks he’ll face the American world champion at the Olympic Stadium in Helsinki. His manager lines up sponsors, photographers and a film crew, and Olli still has to lose a few kilos, but the scales won’t budge. Then at a wedding he meets Raija, and from that moment he drives to see her more often than he goes to training.
