Adapted from a Haruki Murakami short story, passages of which are read in voice-over, it finds room in just seventy-five minutes for loneliness, loss and obsession, all set to music by Ryuichi Sakamoto. It won the Special Jury Prize at Locarno in 2004.
Tony Takitani’s father plays the trombone, is forever on tour and gives his son an American name. Tony grows up alone, and the unusual name does nothing for his popularity at school. Drawing is his passion, and as an adult he becomes a successful technical illustrator. One day a beautifully dressed young woman comes to collect a finished job, and before long their shared home is full of her clothes.
