A celebrated poetic hymn to whales, written in 1988 by the activist and writer Heathcote Williams, inspired this documentary thirty-five years later. Now the camera follows the whales out into the ocean, with underwater footage and their own song.
A humpback whale lies stranded on an empty beach while people pour water over it and wait for the tide to come in. From there the film heads out into the ocean, following whales as they migrate, hunt and sing songs that carry for thousands of kilometres. And it’s the whales themselves who tell the story.
