André Téchiné drew partly on his own youth for this innocent but unashamed queer coming-of-age story, which won him four Césars. Its characters are flesh and blood: they read, argue and fall for the wrong people. Few films are tenderer about first feelings passed from one young heart to the next.
It’s 1962 at a boarding school somewhere in provincial France, and the Algerian War is drawing to a close. François reads a lot and isn’t yet sure of anything about himself. One night Serge, a farmer’s son, comes to his bed, though by morning he’d rather forget it, and soon he’s hanging around Maïté instead. Meanwhile Henri, older than the rest of them, arrives from Algeria angry at everything.
