Ingmar Bergman called Lukas Moodysson’s debut the first masterpiece of a young master. Nothing ever happens in Åmål and everyone knows it, while teenagers Agnes and Elin haven’t yet learned how to hide anything. A cult coming-of-age film with no gloss at all.
Åmål is a small Swedish town with nowhere to go and no reason to go there. Only one guest, a girl in a wheelchair, comes to Agnes’s sixteenth birthday, until later that evening Elin turns up on a stupid bet her sister talked her into, kisses Agnes and runs out. Agnes has been in love with her for a year.
