Nadav Lapid (“Synonyms”) is Israeli, and he doesn’t spare his own country in this jittery, provocative film about loathing your homeland and being an artist who comes from it. In Tel Aviv after October 7th the cabaret goes on, to the sound of retching and howling.
Y. plays the piano and his wife Yasmin dances, and they make their living at parties for the very rich, where they’ll do literally anything they’re asked. A few months after October 7th, a billionaire commissions Y. to write a new national anthem, for a fee that would change their lives. So Y. dyes his hair blond and heads for Gaza.
