Nominated for an Oscar, Simon Lereng Wilmont’s documentary wins you over with its unexpected warmth. He spent a year and a half filming a home in Lysychansk, Ukraine, where children wait for a court to decide their parents’ fate, and where three women try to give them everything they can.
A few years after war broke out in Donbas, children taken from their parents by the courts arrive at a shelter in Lysychansk, in eastern Ukraine, to stay until a judge decides what will become of them. Eva, Sasha and Kolya are among them, and Marharyta, Olga and Anjelika wash them, feed them and sit with them in the evenings. Everyone in the building is waiting for the same decision.
