A young Helena Bonham Carter and Daniel Day-Lewis take on surprisingly romantic roles in Merchant and Ivory’s much-loved costume drama, which won three Oscars. Its upper-class social circles of the early twentieth century reach from sunny Tuscany all the way to cloudy England.
Lucy Honeychurch is a young Englishwoman on her first trip abroad, and in early twentieth-century Florence she meets George Emerson, a quiet, slightly strange young man who is travelling with his father. Once she’s home in England, Lucy gets engaged to the eminently respectable Cecil Vyse. Florence, though, won’t let her forget it.
