Andrea Arnold (“Bird”) reads Emily Brontë impressionistically, with a Black Heathcliff, a handheld camera and moors sodden with rain and mud, and she came home from Venice with a cinematography prize. Nothing will pull these two apart, and here the heights are wuthering with more than passion.
On the Yorkshire moors in the 19th century, Mr Earnshaw brings a boy in off the streets and gives him a bed and a name: Heathcliff. Earnshaw’s son wants him gone from the very first day, but his daughter, Cathy, feels differently. She runs off with the boy onto the moors, where the two of them spend whole days soaked to the skin.
