A sailor bets he’ll marry the first woman who walks through the door, and luckily or unluckily for him, in walks Léa Seydoux. Ildikó Enyedi (“On Body and Soul”) tells the story of the marriage that follows in seven chapters, on a scale that’s both epic and elegant.
Jakob Störr, a Dutch sea captain, has just recovered from an illness and is tired of being alone. Sitting in a café, he bets a friend that he’ll marry the first woman to come in, and the woman who does is Lizzy. They marry, and the captain goes back to sea for months at a time, confident that when he returns he’ll find his wife exactly as he left her.
