Why we chose it

This Oscar-nominated true story follows the love affair that changed Denmark, as the queen grows close to her unstable husband’s German doctor. Mads Mikkelsen and Alicia Vikander star, and Mikkel Boe Følsgaard, who made his debut as the ailing king, came home from Berlin with a Silver Bear.

Synopsis

In 1766 the young princess Caroline Mathilde arrives from England at the court in Copenhagen to marry the mentally ill Christian VII, bringing books that are banned in Denmark. The king is treated by a German doctor, Johann Friedrich Struensee, a reader of Rousseau and Voltaire, and listens to him as to no one else. Soon Struensee is writing royal decrees himself, abolishing censorship and torture, and he is very close to the king’s wife. The court begins to whisper.
