Spike Jonze directs Meryl Streep and Nicolas Cage, who plays both the neurotic screenwriter of the film you’re watching and his go-getting twin brother, in a story within a story, which is how the Kaufmans do things. Donald Kaufman got an Oscar nomination for the screenplay too. He doesn’t exist.
Charlie Kaufman has been hired to turn Susan Orlean’s book about a man who steals rare orchids from the Florida swamps into a film, but months go by and the deadline keeps slipping away from him. Then his twin brother Donald moves in and decides to become a screenwriter too, except that he writes without the slightest effort. Charlie flies to New York to meet Orlean and can’t get a word out.
