One of only two documentaries ever to win the Golden Lion at Venice follows photographer and activist Nan Goldin, who, after her own experience with the opioid OxyContin, took aim at the family that sells it. The Sacklers, she discovered, fund the museums where her work hangs.
In late-1970s New York, Nan Goldin photographs the people around her, and over the next decade most of them die of AIDS. Years later, once she has beaten an addiction to the OxyContin she was prescribed, she sets out to find who makes it. The trail leads straight to the museums that hang her work.
