Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams play one marriage at two moments: when they’re first falling in love, and when a chasm has opened between them. Between the two shoots, Derek Cianfrance had them live together briefly, with a child and a tight budget, and you can feel that truth in every scene.
Dean paints houses, Cindy works as a nurse and their daughter Frankie is now five. When their dog gets out of the yard and is killed by a car, a heartbroken Dean books a motel room for the night so they can get drunk, make love and, just for a moment, get back what they once had. The marriage is only running on momentum now. Yet years ago, carrying furniture into a care home, he saw a girl visiting her grandmother and knew he wasn’t going to give up.
