John Singleton was just 24 when this cult film earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Director, with Cuba Gooding Jr., Ice Cube, Laurence Fishburne and Angela Bassett in the cast. Its honest, harrowing portrait of growing up in South Central LA kicked off a whole wave of hood movies.
It’s 1984 in South Central Los Angeles, and ten-year-old Tre has just got into a fight at school. His mother decides she can’t keep him in line on her own and sends him to live with his father, who lays down the rules on the very first night. Tre makes friends with Doughboy and Ricky, but his father can’t be everywhere at once.
