Nadine Labaki (“Capernaum”) finished shooting her debut a few days before bombs fell on Beirut, yet it never mentions the war. Instead there’s the Si Belle beauty salon, a pot of sugar wax on the stove and five Lebanese women facing everyday dilemmas of love, convention and their own lives.
Five women meet in a beauty salon in Beirut. Layale spends her days waiting for a married man to call, Nisrine is about to marry and has something to hide from her new family, and Jamale is so afraid of ageing that she pulls her skin taut before auditions. Rima washes a client’s hair, while next to her sits an older seamstress who has just been asked out on a date.
