A phone call from Stephen King to the producer got this film its money, and Sam Raimi spent it on a sea of blood, a chainsaw and a severed hand with a mind of its own. It’s gore crossed with slapstick, and B-movie horror doesn’t come any better.
Ash takes his girlfriend Linda to an empty cabin in the woods, where he finds a tape recorded by an archaeologist. When it plays a passage from the Book of the Dead, something wakes in the forest and gets inside Linda, and Ash arms himself with a shovel. After he buries her, her severed head bites his hand, which starts acting on its own and tries to kill him. By the time the archaeologist’s daughter turns up with three strangers, dawn is still a long way off.
