Audrey Diwan won the Golden Lion in Venice for this adaptation of Nobel laureate Annie Ernaux’s book about a student who gets pregnant and wants an abortion in 1960s France, where that could land her in prison. It still feels far too current.
In Angoulême in 1963, Anne is the best student in her year and the first in her family to get this far. When she finds out she’s pregnant, doctors refuse to help because abortion is a crime, and her friends can do nothing as the weeks slip by. So Anne starts selling her belongings to pay someone willing to end the pregnancy.
