Andrew Haigh (“All of Us Strangers”) adapts Willy Vlautin’s novel about a fifteen-year-old and an old racehorse on the road across America. Charlie Plummer won the Mastroianni Award at Venice, Steve Buscemi and Chloë Sevigny co-star, and the coming of age recalls Ken Loach’s “Kes”.
Fifteen-year-old Charley moves to Portland, Oregon, with his father, and since there’s never enough money, he takes a job at the racetrack. Del, a grumpy trainer, hands him the hardest work, while Charley grows attached to a worn-out racehorse called Lean on Pete. Then Pete loses yet another race, and Del decides to sell him to Mexico for slaughter.
