Lukas Moodysson (“Show Me Love”) turns to harrowing drama, inspired by Danguolė Rasalaitė, a sixteen-year-old from Lithuania who was sold to Sweden. What happens to Lilya is devastating, Rammstein thunders on the soundtrack, and the film gets under your skin and stays there.
Sixteen-year-old Lilya is waiting for her mother to take her to America, but her mother leaves the former Soviet republic without her, and her aunt moves the girl into a worse flat. As the money runs out and the neighbours turn their backs, all she has left is Volodya, an eleven-year-old boy nobody wants either. Then one day Andrei offers her a job in Sweden.
