Jeremy Saulnier put all his savings into this film, raised the rest on Kickstarter and left Cannes with a critics’ prize. Dwight goes out to buy a gun and comes back with a postcard, and nothing about his face says killer. This is revenge carried out by the one man least cut out for it.
Dwight lives in his car in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, getting by on what the town throws away. One morning a policewoman brings him news: the man who killed his parents twenty years ago is about to be released from prison. Dwight drives to Virginia to wait for him there, without any kind of plan.
