Yakuza meets the American gangster film in the only movie Takeshi Kitano (“Hana-bi”) shot in the US, though still with a Japanese crew. Kitano wrote, directed, edited and stars in it, and one moment it pins you to your seat with dozens of bodies, the next it drifts into quiet reflection.
There’s no place left in Tokyo for Yamamoto: his boss is dead and his clan has lost the war, so he escapes to Los Angeles. Waiting for him there are his half-brother Ken and a few of Ken’s friends from the street, whom Yamamoto takes under his wing. Within weeks the boys are wearing suits and the Mexican dealers have vanished from the neighbourhood, while Ken watches a brother he barely knew.
