Jessica Hausner (“Club Zero”) never says whether a miracle happened in Lourdes, and in Venice the film won prizes from both a Catholic jury and Italian atheists. Sylvie Testud barely moves, yet you can’t take your eyes off her, unless it’s to watch Léa Seydoux sing “Felicità” at karaoke.
A coach full of pilgrims pulls up in Lourdes. Christine, who has lost almost everything to multiple sclerosis, travels in a wheelchair, and the pilgrimage turns out to be more of a package tour than anything to do with faith. Her volunteer carer, Maria, would rather be eyeing the young men on the stewarding team. Then one morning Christine’s hand moves.
