Michel Gondry (“Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”) built Boris Vian’s “Froth on the Daydream” by hand, with puppets and models, into a world where Audrey Tautou’s heroine has a water lily growing in her lung. The lovers start out surrounded by beauty, until slowly the colour drains away.
Wealthy Colin has a cook and a piano that mixes a different cocktail for every tune. A friend takes him to a party where he meets Chloé, and soon they’re celebrating a lavish wedding. On their honeymoon a water lily starts growing in Chloé’s lung, and only fresh flowers around her bed, new ones every day, can slow it down. Colin keeps buying them for as long as his money lasts, while the apartment begins to shrink.
