Jan-Ole Gerster’s low-budget debut won over audiences and critics and took six German film awards, best film among them. Its hero Niko spends one jazz-scored day in black-and-white Berlin just trying to get a coffee, and he became the face of a generation paralysed by choice.
Over twenty-four hours in Berlin, Niko sneaks out of his girlfriend’s flat before she wakes up and still ends up late for the psychological assessment that decides whether he gets his driving licence back. He drifts around the city, unable to buy so much as a cup of coffee, and plays golf with his father at noon. It’s also the day his money runs out.
