The paralysed editor-in-chief of French Elle had a body as heavy as a diving suit and a mind as light as a butterfly, and his book came out two days before he died. Polish cinematographer Janusz Kamiński gave it its one-of-a-kind images, and it earned four Oscar nominations and two Golden Globes.
Jean-Dominique Bauby, editor of French Elle, wakes up in hospital after a stroke to find that the only part of his body he can still move is his left eyelid. His mind is as sharp as ever, but no one around him knows it. Then a speech therapist starts reading him the alphabet, waiting for him to blink at the letter he wants, and that is how, one letter at a time, he begins to dictate a book.
