It’s 1985, and Cillian Murphy is a coal merchant in a small Irish town who can’t sleep after what he saw at the convent laundry. Drawn from Claire Keegan’s subtle prose that’s hard to shake off, it watches him find the strength to face the truth, though his conscience could cost him dearly.
Bill Furlong sells coal and has never been one to stick his neck out. Then, on a delivery to the convent, he finds a girl who has been locked in the coal shed all night. Soon afterwards the Mother Superior sits him down, pours him tea and presses a Christmas envelope of money into his hand, leaving him in no doubt about what she expects in return.
