Synopsis

In London in the early 1920s, Kitty Garstin, restless for excitement, accepts a proposal from Walter Fane, a reserved bacteriologist, mostly as a way of getting away from her mother. In Shanghai she begins an affair with Charles Townsend, a married vice consul. When Walter finds out, he volunteers to fight a cholera epidemic deep inland, and Kitty must choose between going with him to a Chinese village and a scandalous divorce. Townsend has no intention of leaving his wife.
