Jacques Tati (“Playtime”) wrote this magical story in the 1950s but never filmed it, so it waited half a century for Sylvain Chomet (“The Triplets of Belleville”) to draw it, and an Oscar nomination followed. An illusionist and a girl who believes in magic barely need words between them.
It’s 1959, and an ageing illusionist can only find work where rock and roll hasn’t yet arrived. With nothing left for him in Paris, he heads to London and then on to a tiny Scottish island, where he meets Alice, a girl who has never seen a magician before. Soon she is keeping house for him.
