Filmography
One of the defining figures of American independent and queer cinema. His films dared to speak openly about identity and desire. He revived the language of classic melodrama in the tradition of Douglas Sirk to tell stories of repressed emotion, illness, and social exclusion. Cate Blanchett and Julianne Moore gave some of the best performances of their careers in his films.

Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara’s iconic romance begins at Christmas 1952, when an elegant woman leaves her gloves on a shop girl’s counter. The novel’s author used a pen name and got letters for years, and Todd Haynes turned it into a film with six Oscar nominations and the Queer Palm at Cannes. — At Christmas 1952, Therese is working the toy counter of a New York department store and dreaming of becoming a photographer. When an elegant customer, Carol, buys a train set and leaves her gloves behind, Therese posts them back to her. Carol is going through a divorce, and her husband is trying to take her daughter from her. — Nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role (Cate Blanchett) | Oscars | 2016 Nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role (Rooney Mara) | Oscars | 2016 Nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay | Oscars | 2016 Nominated for Best Cinematography | Oscars | 2016 Nominated for Best Costume Design | Oscars | 2016 Nominated for Best Original Score | Oscars | 2016 Best Actress (Rooney Mara) | Cannes Film Festival | 2015 Queer Palm | Cannes Film Festival | 2015 Nominated for Best Film | Golden Globes | 2016 Golden Frog | CAMERIMAGE Film Festival | 2015

Todd Haynes and Julianne Moore both broke through with this story of a suburban wife so troubled by the chemicals around her that she flees the toxins and slowly cuts herself off. It’s horror without a monster, where no one gives chase and nothing leaps out at you, and all that’s left is unease. — It’s 1987 in Los Angeles, and Carol White has a big house in the suburbs, a husband, a stepson and very little to do. After the house is renovated, her body starts reacting: she coughs in the car, chokes at a baby shower and gets a nosebleed at the hairdresser’s. When she collapses at a dry cleaner’s that is being sprayed for insects, she becomes convinced that chemicals are to blame. — FIPRESCI Award - Special Mention | Rotterdam International Film Festival | 1996 Nominated for Best Feature | Film Independent Spirit Awards | 1996 Nominated for Best Director | Film Independent Spirit Awards | 1996 Nominated for Best Female Lead (Julianne Moore) | Film Independent Spirit Awards | 1996 Nominated for Best Screenplay | Film Independent Spirit Awards | 1996 Official Selection - Directors' Fortnight | Cannes Film Festival | 1995

Censorship in the 1950s kept Douglas Sirk from making this melodrama, so Todd Haynes (“Carol”) made it instead, saying out loud and in colour everything Sirk could only hint at. It’s the role that defined Julianne Moore’s career. — Cathy Whitaker has a house, a husband, children and the respect of every neighbour on her street in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1957. One evening she walks in on her husband, Frank, with another man, and the only person she can still talk to is Raymond, her gardener. The whole town is watching them. — Nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role (Julianne Moore) | Oscars | 2003 Nominated for Best Original Screenplay | Oscars | 2003 Best Actress (Julianne Moore) | Venice Film Festival | 2002 SIGNIS Award - Honorable Mention | Venice Film Festival | 2002

Ewan McGregor, Christian Bale and Jonathan Rhys Meyers wear the glitter in the “Citizen Kane” of glam rock, a Cannes prizewinner from Haynes. David Bowie wouldn’t agree to a biopic, but real musicians inspire it at every turn, and members of Radiohead and Sonic Youth play in its bands. — Brian Slade is a glam rock star who performs as the alien Maxwell Demon, until one night he is shot during a concert. The shooting was supposedly staged, and Slade disappeared straight afterwards. A decade later, New York journalist Arthur Stuart is assigned to find out what became of him, and he starts with Slade’s manager and his ex-wife. On that fateful night, Stuart was in the crowd. — Nominated for Best Costume Design | Oscars | 1999 Best Artistic Contribution | Cannes Film Festival | 1998 Best Costume Design | BAFTA | 1999 Nominated for Best Makeup and Hair | BAFTA | 1999 Best Cinematography | Film Independent Spirit Awards | 1999 Nominated for Best Feature | Film Independent Spirit Awards | 1999 Nominated for Best Director | Film Independent Spirit Awards | 1999

Todd Haynes (“Carol”) tells the true story of chemical companies poisoning the environment, with Mark Ruffalo as the Cincinnati lawyer who took DuPont to court on behalf of the people living next to its plant. By the end you’ll want every Teflon pan out of your kitchen. — In Cincinnati in 1998, Robert Bilott is a lawyer who defends chemical companies. Then Wilbur Tennant, a farmer from Parkersburg, West Virginia, walks into his firm with videotapes of his cows: swollen organs, blackened teeth, tumours. Bilott decides to help, and he sues the chemical giant DuPont, demanding that it hand over its documents. — Nominated for Best Foreign Film | César Awards | 2021
