Cronenberg (“The Fly”) usually explores bodies that mutate and fall apart, but here he turns to minds coming undone. Michael Fassbender plays Carl Jung and Viggo Mortensen plays Freud, with Keira Knightley as Sabina Spielrein between them, and much of what they say comes from their real letters.
In Zurich in 1904, Sabina Spielrein is brought to the Burghölzli hospital in a fit of hysteria. Carl Gustav Jung tries the talking cure of his mentor, Sigmund Freud, on her: he sits down and simply lets her speak. She recovers enough to want to study medicine herself, and she wants Jung too, which she tells him without any pretence.
