Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts sit down at the same table and don’t hold back a single word, in a film Tracy Letts adapted from his own Pulitzer-winning play. Add the summer heat, a handful of pills and a father’s death, and you get an acting tornado.
It’s mid-August in an old house in Osage County, Oklahoma, when the poet Beverly Weston hires a young woman to look after his ailing wife, Violet, who is hooked on pills. Shortly afterwards he disappears without a word. Her three grown daughters and her sister descend on the house, and that evening the whole family sits down to dinner together.
